Three Types of Foreign Degree Recognition

Level Recognition
An individualized comparison that determines whether a foreign higher education qualification corresponds to a Portuguese academic degree or diploma level.
Specific Recognition
A more detailed academic assessment that considers the level, duration, and academic content or field of the foreign qualification in relation to a Portuguese qualification.
Recognition Depends on the Credential and Purpose
DGES
The Directorate-General for Higher Education participates in the recognition system and handles automatic recognition applications alongside Portuguese public higher education institutions.
Public Universities & Polytechnics
Level and specific recognition may be handled through Portuguese public higher education institutions under the applicable national framework.
Degree Evidence
Applicants must provide documentation that clearly proves the foreign higher education degree or diploma was awarded.
NARIC Information
Portugal's ENIC/NARIC information can provide information about foreign qualification levels and institutions, but it does not replace the formal degree recognition process.

Official Diploma
Degree or official document confirming the award.
Academic Records
Transcript or supporting academic documentation where required.
Authentication
Authentication, apostille, or equivalent verification may be required depending on the documents and recognition route.
