Brazil Uses Two Different Procedures

Brazil distinguishes between undergraduate degrees and graduate research degrees earned outside the country.

Foreign undergraduate diplomas are subject to revalidação, while foreign master's and doctoral diplomas are subject to reconhecimento. The evaluation is carried out by eligible Brazilian universities.

There is no automatic nationwide recognition simply because a degree was earned in the United States. The competent Brazilian university evaluates the individual credential under the rules applicable to revalidation or recognition.

Preparing U.S. Academic Documents for Brazil

Brazil and the United States participate in the Hague Apostille Convention. Academic documents presented in Brazilian diploma validation procedures may therefore need to be apostilled in the country where they were issued, depending on the applicable requirement.

The current Carolina Bori guidance states that documents issued by institutions in Hague Convention countries must be apostilled when required under the applicable revalidation or recognition process.
