Using Your Novaris Degree in Spain
Understand the official procedures that may apply when presenting a foreign university degree in Spain for academic, administrative, or professional purposes.
Three Different Recognition Procedures
Spain's Royal Decree 889/2022 establishes different routes depending on why the holder needs the foreign qualification recognized.
Equivalencia
Recognizes a foreign university qualification at the academic level of an official Spanish Bachelor's or Master's degree. It is not the route for authorization to practise a regulated profession.
Homologación
Applies when a foreign qualification is presented for access to a regulated profession covered by the Spanish recognition framework.
Convalidación
Allows completed foreign university subjects or periods of study to be evaluated by a Spanish university toward continuation of studies.
Bachelor's and Master's Degrees
Bachelor's-Level Qualification
For equivalence at Spanish Grado level, the foreign credential must be an official university qualification in its country of origin, normally representing at least three years of full-time study or an equivalent academic workload and permitting progression to Master's-level studies.
Master's-Level Qualification
For equivalence at Spanish Master's level, the foreign qualification must meet the applicable official-status, duration, level, and progression requirements established by Spain.
Doutorados
Academic equivalence to the level of Doctor is handled by Spanish universities rather than through the same central Grado/Máster equivalence procedure.
Electronic Procedure
Applications for the central homologación and equivalencia procedures are handled electronically through Spain's official university recognition systems.
Documents Commonly Required
Diploma
Official foreign university degree or certification proving that the degree was awarded.
Academic Transcript
Academic record showing subjects, duration, credits or workload, and other required information.
Apostille
U.S.-issued academic documents generally require legalization or Hague Apostille when required by the procedure.
Official Translation
Documents not issued in Spanish may require official translation.
Identification
Identity and nationality documentation forms part of the application.
Administrative Fee
The corresponding fee must be paid according to the procedure selected.
